History of the Destitute Asylum

Did one of your ancestors live in the Destitute Asylum? The Migration Museum exhibition In This Place explores the lives of the men, women and children who lived on the site,  as well as how the Destitute Board and other State welfare institutions regulated South Australian lives.

We would love to hear more stories if you have them: enquiries@history.sa.gov.au

You can also check to see if your relative is on our transcribed list of 1678 babies born here 1880-1908. This list is transcribed from handwritten records, which are often difficult to read, and so may contain name inconsistencies, errors or other mistakes.
