Settlement Square is a unique artwork comprising 2,880 inscribed pavers, designed as a tree of life and located in the courtyard of the Migration Museum. This place of lasting recognition engages all who visit and work at the Museum, providing an uplifting sense of the huge contribution made by migrants coming to South Australia from all over the world.
This 20-year project was led by the Migration Museum Foundation, commencing in 1999 and completing in 2020. The objectives of this project were to deepen the connections between the Museum and South Australia’s migrant communities and to raise funds to support the Migration Museum. The History Trust is deeply grateful to the Migration Museum Foundation for leading this project and achieving the lasting legacy of Settlement Square.
Since its completion, Settlement Square has become a focal point for locals and visitors alike. Donors bring their families to visit their paver engraved with an inscription commemorating their journey to South Australia. Visitors can wander around the Square, taking time to learn about the many migrant families who have made South Australia their home, and who continue to contribute to South Australia’s renowned multicultural way of life.
We thank our generous donors and supporters who helped us bring Settlement Square to life.
