The year 2021 marks the 700th anniversary of the death of the great Italian writer Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy. This epic long-form poem, which imagines a tempestuous journey through Hell, into Purgatory and finally to Heaven, is one of the most renowned works of world literature.
Inferno 5 is a unique digital experience that takes visitors into the heart of Dante’s second circle of Hell, a terrible place inhabited by lost souls who suffer for their sins of passion. Here Dante meets lovers from myth and history, including Italy’s legendary, tragic star-crossed couple Paolo and Francesca; Dido, Queen of Carthage; Helen of Troy; Anthony and Cleopatra; and the chivalrous Tristan of the Round Table. All are being forever punished for yielding to their desires.
The Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia invites you to explore the sights, sounds and stories of Dante’s infernal hell-scape. You will meet incredible characters, and gain a deeper understanding of the long-lasting cultural influence and significance of Dante’s literary masterpiece. Using your smart device you can access Inferno 5 in the original Italian, as well as English, French, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Portuguese.
The installation was developed by the Italian Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and produced by the Italian creative media company MTM Reality. It tours thanks to the generosity of the Italian Cultural Institute, and is presented by the Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia, the Italian Consulate in Adelaide and the Migration Museum.
